An extensive report about sports-related concussions in young people, released last week by the Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council, made recommendations that included bolstering research, collecting data, examining injury protocols and educating the public. But the report identified one particularly stubborn challenge: the “culture of resistance” among high school and college athletes, who may be inclined to shrug off the invisible injuries and return immediately to the field. “There is still a culture among athletes,” the report said, “that resists both the self-reporting of concussions and compliance with appropriate concussion management plans.” Dr. Frederick P. These side effects can start out small and unnoticeable, but if an athlete does not take the proper amount of time to recover, the side effects will keep building up on each other and getting worse. For example, one might get only a small headache after suffering a seemingly minor hit to their head, but as they keep playing they feel themselves becoming dizzy and nauseous, and all of a sudden they are angry for something minuscule. These symptoms, if the athlete does not rest and recover, could last weeks and even months after the player gets a concussion. That applies even more so to women because of their premenstrual phases, when "there 's an abrupt drop in the hormone that could cause a kind of withdrawal that either contributes to or worsens symptoms," as mentioned by Marjorie Snyder in "Girls Suffer Sports Concussions at a Higher Rate Than Boys. Why is that Overlooked?"…
