Since Henry Ford, the founder of Ford Motor company, said that a consumer can choose a car in any color if it’s black, customization has come a far way. Customization was deemed very expensive and inaccessible. Nowadays, brands are engaging more in customization to appeal to customers, build loyalty, and create a deeper bond with consumers. It is said that customization have combined elements of mass production to please customers. Companies such as Levi’s would take consumers’ measurements and then send it to the factory electronically so that the consumers jeans can be customized. It can be said to be the new frontier in business for manufacturing markets and service industry. One reason may be because of strong competition and allowing consumers to be a part of their own products. Banks have played a great role in allowing consumers to do their banking transactions online and customizing their banking needs. Wells Fargo has done this for me. I can customize my debit card and use it as an ID. For the bank, this reduces delivery cost and fraud activities, and for me the customer, it gives satisfaction, security and convenience. In manufacturing, mass customization plays a huge role. It plays a huge part in the shoe industry, fashion market, automobile and jewelry industry. It brings advantages to customers such as perfect fit and satisfaction. Companies such as Nike, Zara, Ford, Toyota, Apple, Ferrari, HP and Honda have all benefitted from mass customization. Mass customization has advantages and disadvantages. These include:

Advantages of mass customization:
a. It allows consumers to customize and tailor product and services to their specific needs and this gives the consumer satisfaction. When a consumer is satisfied, this also may also boost business for the manufacturer.
b. Mass customization can be cost effect to both manufacturer and consumer.
c. It builds consumer/ manufacturer relationships.

Disadvantages of mass customization:
