Although she may only choose books that interest her, the teacher has extensive experience and knowledge about many books. First of all, teachers are much older than their pupils so they have had that much more time and opportunities to read books. The average public school teacher is 43 years of age, while the average 7th grade student is only 12 years old. This shows that, on average, teachers have had over 30 more years to explore all different genres and authors. The teacher knows exactly what skills her pupils are lacking and how to bridge the gap in their academic success. With this information she could find out what books provide emphasis on the certain skill she needs her students to understand. An argument that opposes the opinion that students should choose the books is the simple fact that many students would likely choose the easiest book available. Even though the book must reach certain standards, everyone knows the students will most likely pick the book with the least pages possible. This can be avoided by not allowing the students to pick the books that they read. Again, not The Magic School Bus, but not college
