Teachers more now than ever are leaving the field of education because they are being expected to deliver results that they might not have been trained well enough for. In order to establish effective and successful practices in the classroom, America must create strategic educational programs that prepare teachers to meet the needs that American school systems require. “Persons preparing to teach should be required to meet high educational standards….. Colleges and universities offering teaching preparation programs should be judged by how well their graduates meet these criteria.”(Bell, pg. 38, 1983) According to A Nation At Risk by The National Commission on Excellence in Education, this was a problem over thirty years ago that still seems to be an issue that American schools systems are still struggling with today. As a new teacher in the field of education, I can see the struggle and feel the intimidation factors that come along with this career. I am learning certain things that I was never taught in school like thorough and effective “parent communication techniques” and proper “pre and post assessment strategies” to establish what students do and do not already know. To many outside sources seem to have the answer to America’s issues when it comes to education. People like Oprah, Chris Christie, and Mark Zuckerberg all have been in the spotlight for their generous donations and opinions about educational reform in the U.S. According to the book The Prize, their ideals and strategies seem logical, however none of these individuals have the proper training or experience in the field of education that qualifies them to make any decisions. When generous donations are given to the field of education in the U.S, you almost have to wonder if there is a hidden agenda behind the donation and who it might affect in the long run. Celebrities are not always the culprits. We have seen ulterior motives and actions hurt certain school districts from individuals who work within them. The Newark School District was hurt financially by an internal sources. “In 1994, state Department of Education cited gross mismanagement, corruption, and instructional failure throughout the Newark district even school board members treated themselves to cars, tropical junkets, and expensive meals.” (Russakoff, pg. 19, 2015).
