How to Show Love
How is love shown? How do you know how much one loves the other? Is it through words, money, or gifts? In the short stories “The Gift of the Magi” by O. Henry and “Bluffing” by Gail Helgason they show that love is not about what you say, it is about what you do. Words can be used without the user being responsible to its meanings, so it cannot be used to measure one’s love for another. Only your actions can show how much one means to you. For love, one is willing to give up the most precious thing they have for the other. One will also put the other’s feelings in front their own and they are able to stay with them through the hardest situations. In love, words are not enough to express its meaning, only your actions are enough

Firstly, in “The Gift of the Magi” Della cares more about Jim’s happiness and thoughts more than her own feelings. When Della sells her hair for Jim’s gift, she cries as she heads towards a hair salon to sell her hair. Della puts her own emotion behind her as she makes up her minds about cutting her cherished hair for Jim’s happiness. Della is unhappy to let her hair go, but this is incomparable to Jim’s happiness. Secondly, after Della cuts her hair, she worries if Jim will like her new appearance; Della does not think about the loss of what she treasures the most, but emotions of Jim and how he will react to her new look. Della always thinks of Jim’s feeling first before her own. In “Bluffing” Liam and Gabriella both think of themselves first and never each other. First of all, Liam decides on his own that he and Gabriella will live in a van for three months and go down south for an adventure. Liam makes this decision without asking the opinion of Gabriella:“‘Clive and I worked it out last week … If we pool our resources, live in his old van, we’ve got just enough to get by for three months over the winter. So we’re gonna head down south’” (Helgason 3) Liam says his decision as a statement, not a question, or an advice, nor did he leave room in his words for any rejection. In his words, there is no evidence of him thinking of Gabriella's feelings or opinions, because he cares more about his …show more content…
The relationships between the main characters in the two stories “The Gift of the Magi” and “Bluffing” contracts each other. As in the first story, there is no doubt that Della and Jim love each other and the depth of their love is fully shown through their actions. However, in the second story between the characters Liam and Gabriella, their words say that their love for each other is deeper than the ocean, but their actions prove all of their words wrong. It is also questionable if they truly loved each other. If one loves you they can willingly give up the most treasured they have for you because you are worth more than anything they have ever owned. They will always put you in front of themselves and make sure of your happiness and they will stay with you through the hardest times. Your words can lie but your actions do

Marian Keyes once said, “Some think love can be measured by the amount of butterflies in their tummy. Others think love can be measured in bunches of flowers, or by using the words ‘for ever.’ But love can only truly be measured by actions. It can be a small thing, such as peeling an orange for a person you love because you know they don’t like doing it.” This demonstrates that love can not only be measured in words but in actions too.…

One instance when this is demonstrated is when citizens are forbidden to love, Jonas and The Giver demonstrate repeatedly how important love is to everyone. The Giver demonstrates love when he declares, “‘You can understand, then, that that’s what I felt for Rosemary… I loved her… I feel it for you, too…’” (177). The Giver and Jonas are the only ones who truly understand the meaning of love, and know through their shared memories that a family is not an actual family without love, and that the world is a cruel place if one does not have any loved ones, like The Giver and Jonas do.…

The short story “The Gift of the Magi” by O. Henry portrays the theme that 'relationships are more important than material belongings' through its use of situational irony. To start, when Della cut her hair, Jim said that there was not “a haircut or a shave or a shampoo that could make me like my girl any less” (Henry 107). This shows that Jim does not love Della for her hair, even though it may be a very defining feature of her, Jim didn't like her any less. Also, even though Jim got her combs for Christmas, he didn't get mad at Della for cutting her hair, loving her all the same. Secondly, Della cut her hair to buy a present that “had surely been made for Jim and no one else” (Henry 106).…
