Types of Problematic Waterfowl Hunters The majority of people have came to the conclusion that most hunters are alike. This is far from the case. There are different types of hunters just like there are different types of people. These hunters are not only divided by the species they pursue, but also by the tactics they use when hunting, and by their own personal ethics. Waterfowl hunting consist of ducks, geese, and swans. In different states the rules are different, so while shooting a swan in Nebraska is a very illegal act and is know as poaching; shooting a swan in South Dakota is known as a great accomplishment and is perfectly legal. Just like the different laws of hunting waterfowl, there are many different types of people that pursue waterfowl, and some of these types are problematic to the wildlife or other hunters. Old Schoolers Old schoolers are hunters whom believe they can fool a bird by throwing out some black tires and using those as decoys; this tactic once worked, but that was in the 60’s. …show more content…
Times have changed since then and there are a lot more people that hunt. Since there are more hunters around, the birds have become educated and are much harder to hunt because they have been changed by survival of the fittest. The dumb geese that did not figure out hunting have been killed by hunters, and their genes no longer exist. Getting out of being an old school is very easy; all you have to do is buy some updated gear and you are set.
Sky Busters Sky busters are very obnoxious and part of the reason that birds have become smarter. These are the types of hunters that take shots that are way out of a lethal range. This kind of shooting is unethical because it leads to birds getting wounded but not killed. Being a sky buster is not punishable by law, but it does give you a bad rep in the hunting community. Sky busters need to look at what they are doing to the birds that they cripple and do not find. This would be very eye opening for them, and would end their habit of sky busting. Decoy Warriors Decoy warriors can never be satisfied with a small decoy spread. They are the type of hunter that will put out 700 decoys to shoot five birds. This is not frowned upon, but is very fun to laugh at the hunters that fall under this category. This is a comical act because there is a lot of work that goes into putting out decoys, and people can get the same success when using a tenth of the decoys, which means a tenth of the work. The best way to fix a decoy warrior is showing them that a hunter can be successful without using a plethora of decoys. Weekend Warriors Weekend warriors are very common in the hunting community. These hunters usually have a full time job so they are only able to hunt on weekends and holidays. These hunters are the reason that public hunting ground is over crowded on weekends. There is no fix weekend warrior can try, they simply do not have any time to hunt besides on the weekends. The best thing a normal hunter can do is hunt on the weekdays so the

Duck hunters are still finding it slow in November, but there has been slight improvement in the Public Shooting areas. In the Sacramento Refuge last Saturday, the average of birds per hunter was up to 1.16. This was the highest average in the area. Not very good, but the coming cold weather systems should get more birds moving. In the Los Banos area, the high of 2.3 was at Salt Slough, followed by Gadwall at 1.8, and Merced at 1.6.…

We also have taken part in helping keep duck populations in the high ranges; by making nest boxes which some breeds of duck use make their nest in. The duck hunting community as a whole helps the national as well as local wildlife agencies. They do this by purchasing their Federal Duck Stamp as well as their individual state required hunting licenses. These stamps aren’t cheaper either, especially since all the prices got raised this year. The hunters never complain, it’s something that you can’t put a price to high on, no matter…

Hunting has been around since the dawn of time. Having transformed from a vital means of survival to a sporting activity, people have long debated both sides of the issue. While some view hunting as a righteous action, others despise the deed. The argument for hunting as an admirable or distasteful act is still relevant to present society. As seen in the writings of Rick Bass and Robert G. Schreiner through many comparisons and differences, imagery, deeper meanings, stances, and views, the debate of hunting is a controversial matter.…

Hunting demands to be treated with the same respect as a sport like basketball or soccer, which require talent and acquired skill, even being acknowledged in the Olympics (although never shooting animals). Pigeon shoots, which essentially mean releasing captive doves from a box and seeing who can shoot the most for a reward incentive, date back to around the 1790’s, with the demographic being mostly the wealthy, white, male population. Due to backlash in recent years, they have been outlawed in many places and the most popular one in Hegins, Pennsylvania was put to a halt after drawing national attention from activists like PETA (Bronner 410). Hunting is valued as a sport in the South, so with any sport comes acquired skill, dedication, competition, and rewards. Comedian Paul Rodriguez stated “Hunting is not a sport.…

Duck hunting can be very frustrating to serious hunters. An example could be, a week ago Wednesday, when big numbers of ducks were in the Los Banos Complex and averages were well up in most refuges. At the Santa Fe Club near Gustine, limits were the rule as it was in most private clubs. And then Saturday, the bigger influx of birds were gone, possibly due to heavy rain prior to the shoot day. My son Bill, and Steve Hinze, of Aptos, shot at the Santa Cruz Club Saturday, and bagged limits of Greenwing Teal and two snow geese.…

A common, although very general, definition of wildlife crime states that it is any violation of a criminal law (clearly/for a single purpose) designed to protect wildlife. One of the most common wildlife crimes is illegally killing, which is generally defined as taking a wild useful thing/valuable supply out of season or through an illegal means. The laws usually cover animals (including (milk-producing animals), reptiles, birds, (frogs, toads, etc.), fish, and even insects), as well as certain plants . Although (boiling/killing/taking from somewhere else) often results in the death of an animal, it also includes illegal live trapping of animals that are later sold or traded for (money made/good thing received). illegally killing is not simply hunting out of season or with the wrong type of weapon; it can also be the killing or trapping of (in danger of disappearing forever), rare, or protected species.…

The time put into waterfowl hunting differs from decoying and jumping waterfowl. When decoying waterfowl you will need to have time to get to the pond you are going, setting up decoys, making a blind and sitting out for hours at a time. When going out in the morning to decoy waterfowl, people will want to be to their hunting location about two hours early. Being there two hours early will give people time to set up decoys and set up or make a blind to hide from the birds.…
