There are many problems caused by water treatment. Every year, millions of people come in contact with bacteria-infected drinking water caused by insufficient disinfection of the water supply. Chlorine is often used to disinfect the water supply. However, sometimes chlorine is used incorrectly on untreated water. This causes chlorine and natural organics in the water to form a by-product called trihalomethanes. This can result in people experiencing problems with their liver, kidneys, or immune systems. Some people are more vulnerable to contaminants in water than others. People with cancer, people that have organ transplants, people with immune system disorders, and elderly persons and infants are more at risk to these contaminants. Issues …show more content…
Hard water is caused by magnesium and calcium salts in the water. It can cause soap curd, scum in sinks and bathtubs, and white scale deposits in pipes. This could cause kidney or bladder stones if the water is drunk. Grittiness in water is caused by very fine sand and silt in water. There can be salt, sand, clay, dirt, rust, or gray fiber in the water. Acid water causes the water to pick up iron, causing rust. The gray fiber is caused by organic matter in raw algae. There can be disease causing organisms in turbid water, making people very sick. Many times, excessive chlorine is used to solve these problems, leading to too much chlorine. This causes even more problems with the water. Another problem is acid water. Acid water can be noticed if the water is leaving green stains on sinks and giving a blue-green color to the water.
