JoJo Henderson Ms. Gay ENGL 1301.22 20 Oct. 2015 Textual Rhetorical Analysis: “Goodell Defends Redskins’ Name” In the last seventy-five years there have been effortless attempts by protesters to rid the Washington football organization of the “Redskins” nickname. In 2013, protesters were assisted by ten U.S. Congress members in the effort to strip the organization of their beloved mascot. These congress members wrote a letter filled with their concerns to Roger Goodell (NFL Commissioner) along with Dan Snyder (Washington Redskins Franchise Owner) and also to every NFL organization in the league.…
Response to Ward Churchill’s Essay There are several reasons why Ward Churchill argues that names of sports teams such as “Braves”, “Indians”, and “Chiefs” are examples of outright racism and as insulting to Native Americans as the “Redskins” mascot. First, in real life, names of Indian Americans (in a combination with native symbols and images) are frequently used in a derogatory manner, depicting native Indians as inhuman, menacing, and grotesque. Using tribal names of Indian Americans helps to condition general public to view Native Americans as savages by associating names of tribes with dehumanizing, offensive, and derogatory practices. Second, although it may be argued that such names are intended to demonstrate respect for Native…
This controversial issue has two clear sides. Many people feel that Native American mascots should not be used in sports. To begin with, people believe that using such mascots are racist and stereotypical. Such mascots give off a negative image for Native American children. Having to change the school’s mascot could cost the organization too much money.…
There is no reason the redskins should change their name. This football team's home is the Nation's Capital, Washington, DC. Washington DC’s first people were natives. DC wanted to name their football team after natives since they were the first one here. They want to give honor to the first settlers.…
Indian Mascots- You’re Out! The article “Indian Mascots- You’re Out” written by Jack Shakley in August 2011 and published by the LA Times. Shakley argues that Indians mascots are making fools out of the race and that mascots with Indian names should be banned.…
You know, 6th graders, the use of the team names Redskins and how offensive to native americans it is, is very interesting! I know that the name redskins can and is very offensive to native americans. I also know that some states, like california, are trying to and have already banned the name redskins for teams and high schools and things like that. The washington redskins are in court trying to keep the team name and not have to think about different names. Also the Washington Redskins are trying to keep their name because it has been that threw out the whole Washington’s franchise.…
NFL football is one of America’s favorite past times. Every Sunday in the fall millions of fans pile into stadiums across the country to with hope that their team has a successful season, and can hopefully go all the way and reach the Super Bowl. Cleveland Browns fans hope for this every year, but are let down again and again. At the time of writing this essay the Cleveland Browns are 0-12 and are well on their way to being winless. If they can’t manage to win a game they will be only the second team in NFL history to go 0-16 in a single season.(Gardner)…
Washington Redskins team owner Daniel Snyder has been standing his ground over the controversy of the teams’ name, very firmly standing by his belief that the name is not disrespectful but is a term of honor. Standing with Snyder on the issue is NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, who agrees whole heartedly that the name is meant to honor not disrespect the Native American people. Snyder and other supporters of the team do not feel they are being disrespectful to the Native Americans because they are not using the word is a derogatory manner. They are not encouraging violence against the Natives or anyone else, and the use of the word represents much more to the fans than a racial slur. Snyder also reminded everyone that the team was named after its very first head coach, who was Native American-…
Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me. In recent history, society as a whole has moved away from the message of a childhood rhyme; in an age where a politically correct vernacular dominates, mainstream America is incredibly concerned with using non-offensive terms. The use of a word like nigger or chink would be inappropriate by today’s standards, so why would the term redskin still be deemed appropriate in reference to the indigenous population of North America? C. Richard King attempts to answer this question by framing his piece Redskins: Insult and Brand with the NFL’s Washington Redskins team. King’s critical analysis on the etymology of redskins focuses on this high grossing NFL franchise, as he describes that the term’s, “lingering presence undermines…
Many Redskins fans will argue that the name is, in fact, not racist because it is part of their culture too and that Native Americans shouldn’t be offended because it’s just a name, they shouldn’t take it too seriously. In fact, one Redskins fan featured in the video had stated “Do you know any Native Americans? Am I not a Native American? Was I not born in this country?” This perfectly demonstrates how whiteness allows white people to see other races as if we are all on the same playing field and then, when people of color disagree, gives white people the privilege to silence them as well.…
As the clock ticks, I wait anxiously for it to hit 3:23 P.M. All I could think about was football practice. My first game is tomorrow and I am overwhelmed with excitement. Forgetting to pay attention in class the teacher calls on me saying “Sabin, what does the m stand for in y=mx+b?”, me being clueless I look at my notes. Being lucky, another student answers saying “m is slope”.…
The Football Hall of Fame is an honorable place for athletes that have participated, or are currently in the NFL (National Football League). Being in the Hall of Fame would not only make a Football player feel accomplished, but it only makes them do better in life. Furthermore, the Hall of Fame has over 17 different locations in the USA (United States of America). According to Ray Lewis (Who is a Hall of Famer), he thinks the Hall of Fame is a fantastic place to be inducted to and is a blessing for whomever makes it there.…
The announcement discharged by supervisor expressed: " The Oregonian will immediately discontinue using sports teams’ names and nicknames that many Americans feel are offensive to members of racial, religious, or ethnic groups. Initially, this will include references to Redskins, Redmen, Indians, and Braves”" (Jensen, 1994, p. 18). As indicated by Jensen (1994), the announcement keeps on expressing that the daily paper may drop different names on the off chance that they are too considered hostile. The editorial manager composed the purpose behind the approach was " “the belief that these names tend to perpetuate stereotypes that damage the dignity and self-respect of many people in our society" (p. 18). As indicated by Hofmann (2005), in 1993 the…
They are alike because kids at our school make touchdowns and get very excited and at a real football games the players make touchdowns and get very excited too. The people who play at our school think football is fun and real football players think it is fun too. Football is a fun game to our players and real players. Our school playground is different from a real football field because the people who like to play do not play how a real football team would play. They are different because a real football field would not have any slide, swings, monkey bars, monorail and a kickball field.…
Every year, there is an annual conclusion for in every sport league. For the NFL, that conclusion just so happens to be called the Super Bowl. This year was Super Bowl 49 (XLIX) which took place in Arizona. It was against the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks. At half time there is always a performance to keep the spectators amped up during the mini break with entertainment as well as to keep entertained the viewers at home so they stay on the channel and not be tempted to change it.…
