Historians have discussed what to call the time period between 500 CE and 1400 CE, in Europe, for years. It began with the fall of the Roman Empire, which lead to feudalism after years of unrest. Although architecture, literature and art advanced and flourished during this time, it was still a period of darkness in which the Roman Catholic Church provided spiritual and non-religious guidance.
