As many of us may know, the media affects us all in one way or another. Whether it is through social media, watching the news on television, or reading the morning newspaper. American Politics Today (2015) defines mass media as, “Sources that provide information to the average citizen, such as newspapers, television networks, radio stations, podcasts, and websites” (Bianco & Canon, p. 238). For many us, media is an outlet to access and gain knowledge about current events. The ways it can affect us depends on the way we interpret the information provided or which political party we represent. While watching the film, I discovered many underlying themes in the film including, sex scandals, how the president controls the media, how the media controls the public opinion, how the media and the president can manipulate the public on who to vote for during an election, and how much the public opinion can overall be manipulated. An overarching theme of the film included scandals surrounding the presidency and how the media can sway the public and set the agenda concerning another issue. Defined by Dr. Park, agenda-setting is, “The process by which the media identifies the issues the public should be concerned about” (2017). After watching the film, I have a whole new perspective on the media and the ways in which the media uses pertinent information for the purpose of being devious. It was quite disturbing to me to watch the presidential employees enlist the assistance of a movie director to devise a plan to prime, then frame, false information for the sake of the election outcome. I am in large disagreement with the film’s main theme because of all the negative ways in which the media uses to gain its readers attention.
