While out on a recent clinical placement in an elderly mental health unit. Joan was a seventy-five-year-old elderly lady that has a diagnosis of server depression and anxiety, Joan also needed a walking aid and assistance with most daily activities. These factors making Joan very vulnerable in various aspects, Joan is vulnerable due to her mental health and physical condition that requires her to use walking aids and assistance from health care professionals.

Many social, psychological, and biological factors influence the level of mental health of an individual at any point in their life. As well as the usual life stressors, that all people have, some elderly people lose the ability to live self-sufficiently for many reasons such as, inadequate mobility, continuing pain, fragility or other mental or physical problems, the ability to carry out tasks for daily living, functional ability and therefor they may require various form of long-term care. In addition, older people are more likely to experience events such as bereavement, a drop in socioeconomic status with retirement, or a disability. Any of these factors can result in isolation, loss of independence, loneliness and psychological distress in older people.
