Volunteering Experience Paper

My experience volunteering at an orphanage in Korea taught me a lot about the Korean culture, the emotional trauma of an orphan, and the gratification of helping others. The learning experience created a great bond and understanding of the children. I was in the Beta club, we had to go to the Korean orphanage in order to get our community service hours, for a week. This orphanage was located at a Catholic church by owners Mrs. Lee and Mr. Sung. They spoke English very well and told us everything and how they started their own orphanage. They started out with nothing and they raised money by volunteering and that’s how they were able to own their orphanage. So all of the beta club members went in and we saw 75% girls and 25% boys. The reason to this was that the Korean couples would only adopt boys than girls. Its some kind of Korean tradition for the mother to have a boy first, the reason to this is that they think that the boy would carry on their legacy. I felt really bad for the kids at the orphanage. Feeling unwanted by the parents is a major trauma for these kids. I have noticed that these kids were not close and did not talk that much. Teaching these kids English was very hard, I would wonder if these kids are listening because they would just sit there and just look at you with out repeating anything. These kids had no smiles at all. I tries very hard to make these kids laugh but I failed to do so. So instead of a week, I decided to go back to the orphanage with some of my …show more content…
I absolutely did not think of this opportunity only as a community service which would benefit me in the future for my resume. I thought of this as a learning opportunity about these orphans and helping these children by giving them a chance to smile and laugh as normal kids would do. I wanted to teach them to always smile and keep their heads up. I achieved a goal in life with this amazing opportunity and would do this all over

I found it interesting that the students giving toys to the children caused such a problem when it was a time of celebration and facing the fact that the children would live there have so little. However, I thought it was very creative to use the toys to expand the mission by handing out a toy to a child if they took the anti-parasite medicine.…

I have donated time in my city, state, country and internationally. Through the many opportunities that I have had for community service, I have been able to broaden my views, and look outside my community at how others experience our world. I have visited very diverse communities ranging from the inner city of Detroit, MI to a small, economically depressed village in Honduras, to the mountains of Pennsylvania and inside homes very different from mine in my own…

For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

When volunteering at West Minnehaha it made me realize things that I didn’t pay attention to before going in. The point was to build relationships, problem solve, what to do in a conflict situation, and step outside of my comfort zone. I learned how to do every single one of those things. I realized that the kids are in need of someone who they can look up to and a dependable person who they can count on. For example, I was looking after a few kids that were doing homework and when walking around I hear a conversation of two kids.…

That helped me look at life in a simpler way, and taught me to put aside anything I was going through to make this young student’s day. I’ve also had the chance to see the unfairness of the world impacting those in my community when I volunteered at two Center for Human Development (CHD) programs. I have helped out at the Grace House, a program for mothers who are in recovery from addiction, and their children. I’ve also helped at a farm share held for homeless families in CHD shelters, which provides them with free…

This has led me to take pride in the community around me and help create a greater society with the foundation that the National Junior Honor Society has introduced to me. The quality of Service is an ideal that I can directly relate to through personal experience, therefore creating significance in my life.…

Volunteering at Veterans Affairs Medical Center was one of the greatest experience I've ever had. Sitting down with the elderly and getting to know them, I noticed if more teens could actually sit down and take the time to talk to an elderly person they could gain an opulent amount of knowledge. Sitting down and getting to talk an innumerable amount of veterans as I could, I was intrigued by how each person had a story of their own going through WWII. Voluntarily, I was able to contribute to the organization by having open conversations with the veterans, providing beverages, and having a great time. It wasn't till the end of the program when my perception began to change about the organization I volunteered for, it's more than just about kids…

Volunteering at the homeless shelter is one of my favorite things to do. A few weeks ago, on a serene Saturday morning, my family and I volunteered at Loaves and Fishes. It was special to see just the sheer amount of people who had come out to volunteer on that Saturday. If you think about, they could’ve been doing anything on that Saturday morning. Yet, they decided to help give back to their community.…

If only there would have been more people volunteering, then so much more people could have been helped. And if more people can be help, then the suffering on earth can be ease. The big problem is that everyone is so busy with their personal life that they forget about the importance of helping others. A positive aspect I saw was that those who were already volunteering were really dedicated and kind hearted. I believe they are making a big impact on every person they touched and made it a task to spread their kindness.…
