Virus Monologue

Great Essays
Every day the news talks about the Virus and how it’s getting worse. We don’t have a cure yet so more people are getting infected and more people die. I’m really starting to get sick of all the death. Here in the U.S. we have special compounds for the uninfected. This is where I live, with my mom and dad. Everyone in the compound works very hard to keep the virus from entering. In fact, both of my parents are scientist and they are desperate to find a cure. My friend Will and I are watchers, we watch the boarders to the compound to ensure the infected don’t get in.
“Quite night”
The sound of Wills voice pulled me from my thoughts. He stared at me waiting for a reply.
“What?” I replied confused.
“I said, quiet night.” He repeated.
“Yes,” I sighed sadly.
Will eyed me, “why do you sound sad? It’s good that it’s quiet” “Not for them it isn’t. The quitter it is means the sicker they are, or worse, dead.” I muttered. Will stopped checking the perimeter and nodded. Before he could try and brighten the mood the loudspeaker came on. “Watcher Lee, please report to the laboratory as soon as possible. Watcher Lee, please report to the laboratory as soon as possible. Thank you.” I handed Will my watchers flash light and headed for the laboratory. “If they ask,” Will shouts after me. “I’ve been on watch all night,” he finishes with a smirk. “I don’t even want to know,” I retort over my shoulder and sprint towards my parent’s lab. As I entered the lab my father waved me towards his office. “Hey dad, did you send the announcement for me?” I asked as I sat down in one of the chairs across his desk. My dad shut the door then took his seat behind his desk. He pulled out some papers and frowned. “I did. Look at these” He handed me a pack of papers showing the death toll. Nearly seventy five percent of the world was infected and from them half were dead. I closed my

You are a very capable young man.” He barked as he stood and walked towards the door.
I followed him to the door.
“Think about it, and if you can help, meet me at the entrance before sunrise. Now, go get some rest.”
“Fine, I’ll think about it.” I dragged my feet the entire way to my room. My mind was racing with thoughts. How can I do this? Why does my father only trust me with this job? I could get infected out there.
When I got into my room, I went over to my bed and laid down not even bothering to change my clothes. And then my own words from earlier entered my mind ‘Not for them it isn’t. The quitter it is means the sicker they are, or worse, dead.’ My eyes popped opened.
“I’ll do it” I declared decidedly. But I won’t be alone, I grab the phone on my bedside table and dial 0 for the operator.
“Operator, how can I help you” the familiar voice of my 6th grade teacher asks.
“Hi, Ms. Z, can you get watcher Will on the line please?” I yawn sleepily.
“Just a minute Lee.”
After a few minutes the Will answers, “Hello, this is watcher Will.”
“Will, its Lee” I announce.
“Oh hey Lee, so what did he say about the potatoes?” He asks immediately.
“Potatoes?” I questions
“Never mind, what’s up Lee?” he

The President of Boys Thinking that I was going to have to become the “leader,” or otherwise correct form as, “President,” as a calling from my bishop sent chills through my blood and my heart pounding. I knew that there would be a new president called since our previous one moved away sadly as he was a friend, but I didn’t really think of being called. I was called to be the president of the deacon’s quorum. It was a sunny day and church had just ended and I was walking through the hallways of the building that had half white walls, a brown wooden chair railing across the middle, and a rough, hairy tan colored wall as the other half.…

“I must observe also that the plague, as I suppose all distempers do, operated in a different manner on differing constitutions; some were immediately overwhelmed with it, and it came to violent fevers, vomitings, insufferable headaches, pains in the back, and so up to ravings and ragings with those pains; others with swellings and tumours in the neck or groin, or armpits, which till they could be broke put them into insufferable agonies and torment; while others, as I have observed, were silently infected, the fever preying upon their spirits insensibly, and they seeing little of it till they fell into swooning, and faintings, and death without pain.” (DeFoe, 1722, p.71) Orders published by the Lord Mayor were a set of rules to be set in place…

As I soaked into the hospital bed, chained onto various machines unknown to me of their purpose. I glared at the ceiling fan above me; watching the blades circle in motion, as time continued to pass. Before a bad stomach ache became stabbing pain and a deadly fever, I consulted with many puzzled pediatric doctors. They drew the diagnosis that my sickness was an infection by the “Mono” Virus. Mononucleosis, also called the “kissing disease”, is a common sickness in young adults spread through fluid in the oral cavity.…

The Enemy, one of the most darkest young adult literature I have ever read. No matter what chapter I’m in, there’s always seems to be a zombie somewhere within the pages. If I were to use one word to describe this novel, it would be “gruesome.” Seriously, a mysterious virus that has no known cure to counter it turned all adults into child-eating zombies. Children and teens that aren’t over the age of 16 are immune to this virus for some reason.…
