Vincent Van Gogh's Analysis

Vincent Van Gogh was one of the most auspicious artists of the 19th century. His paintings are still marveled at by people across the globe. Some of his words, however, were just as brilliant as his art. Van Gogh once said, “Great things are done by a series of small things brought together”. This summer, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, Freakonomics and Dead Poets’ Society helped me to grow as a reader, writer and thinker by encouraging me that, while greatness takes time a preparation through small milestone, it is worth the effort. Summer reading is an important activity because it challenges young readers’ brain over the summer and prevents the brain from forgetting previously learned information. A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, by Mark Twain, tells the story of a young man, Hank, who gets hit on the head with a crowbar and suddenly finds himself among King Arthur and the knights of the round table. Hank sees how far the country is behind technologically, and how stupid the citizens are, so he attempts to take over authority from King Arthur. He does so with subtle actions, slowly changing routines, or instituting new practices that only he is knowledgeable about, so he controls them. Hank uses this lack of knowledge to his advantage, saying “But don’t you know, there are some things that can beat smartness and foresight? Awkwardness and stupidity can” (Twain 242). For example, in the Valley of Holiness, the sacred fountain is said to be under a curse. Upon inspection, Hank finds that this “curse” is just a leak. However, he plays along in order to convince the people of what a great magician he is. He secretly brings in supplies from the kingdom, and gets to work on fixing the leak. When he finishes, he constructs an extravagant show to disillusion the people. Hank describes his show as “There they were, all going at once, red, blue, green, purple! Four furious volcanoes pouring vast clouds of radiant smoke aloft, and spreading a blinding rainbowed noonday to the furthest confines of that valley” (Twain 155). He uses this instance, as well as others, such as his curse of darkness—which was just a solar eclipse— to gain the trust of the country, and he eventually becomes second to King Arthur, who blindly agrees with anything Hank says. He builds up the trust of the people little by little, so that one day he finally achieves his big goal. Freakonomics describes the small processes that often go unnoticed behind major economical actions. It essentially embodies the meaning of Van Gogh’s quote, because nothing in this novel happens without a handful of other things moving it into place. For example, Freakonomics discusses why children become successful in relation to their parents’ actions, and the answer to the shocking question, “how much do parents really matter?” This excerpt attempts to explain a parent’s influence in their child’s life. Through hundreds of studies, scientists have concluded that “…[Parents] matter a great deal. Here is the conundrum: by the time most people pick up a parenting book, it …show more content…
They have taught me that if I want to succeed, I must be willing to put in the effort required, carry out the small steps, and withstand the minor failures along the way to greatness. As a reader, writer and thinker, I grew tremendously. By reading Mark Twain, I was challenged to understand a more difficult style of writing, one above my grade level. As for becoming a better writer, there is an old saying that reads something along the lines of “There are two ways to become a better writer, in general: write a lot, and read a lot” (Castro 1). I have become a better writer simply by reading and exposing myself to examples of elevated diction, literary devices, and new vocabulary. As a thinker, I believe one is always evolving. Every day experiences shape one’s perception of the world and how they think of their surroundings, individuals around them, and the environment. Freakonomics specifically challenged my way of thinking because it revealed the true inner workings of today’s economy, something I had not previously known. Overall, summer reading is a beneficial program because it ensures that students not only retain information, but gain new experiences, skills, and views on the world, just as I

After the film had aired, both Theo van Gogh and Hirsi Ali received thousands of death threats, which resulted in the murder of Theo Van Gogh and the seclusion of Hirsi Ali. According to some scholars, Theo van Gogh’s troubled history with the Muslim community justified the leaders blaming the film that for spreading Islam phobia. Theo van Gogh was a well-known Dutch filmmaker/author and is the great grand nephew of the famous painter Vincent van Gogh. Unfortunately, Theo van Gogh was not famous for his well written books or inspiring documentaries but rather for his controversial outspoken opinions on Muslims, Jews and Christians or as I say the “former Donald Trump” of his time.…

In this essay I will discuss the ways that Vincent Van Gogh’s, The Night Cafe, 1888 was used as influence for Ernest Ludwig Kirchner’s, Street, Dresden, 1908. To prove my point I will provide visual analyzations of the pieces, some background to the artists and the art movements they were associated with, and events that happened around the time the paintings were created that affected many artists and the work they created. Vincent Van Gogh’s painting, Night Cafe, depicts a scene a cafe with four empty tables as well as three with people seated at them. There is a green pool table at the center of the room that casts a large orange shadow onto the yellow floor. There is a man with neon green hair in a yellow suit standing to the right of…

Every year at Laurel Christian School, we are given a Summer Reading Assignment. The summer assignment consist of several rules, such as reading an assigned book given by your instructor, and keeping a journal of your reading in a standard size spiral bound notebook. In this case the notebook plays a very important role. For each chapter summary, you are required to title the page, give a plot summary, and write a personal analysis of the chapter. It may sound boring or lame but it is very helpful in several ways, simply because over the summer, students are too busy traveling, sleeping late, and having great time and afterwards forgetting everything about education.…

Ironically, though I wasn’t immediately taken with reading, I became an avid reader after those first few difficult years. I was a regular at my elementary school’s small library, and I competed in everything book-related that I could. Battle of the books, spelling bees, and English classes were my favorite pastimes in grade school. Other children dreaded completing summer reading and literature studies, but I looked at reading…

Human form in art has since then evolved and become even more precise. In the Anthony Van Dyck’s painting there are many features that he has been able to create in this painting. It show’s how much ancient Greek art has evolved and made such an impact on art. Looking at the body features, like the fact that there is the shape of bones in Icarus’ or the veins in Deadalus’s hand. Looking at the painting, there is a very obvious difference between the father and son because Deadalus looks a lot older and has wrinkles in his forehead.…

The story that I want to share is, the basic yet often talked about transition, between high school and college. High school was so much easier for me back then, you could get away with so much more and not worried about homework as much. Now in college, it feels like I’ve sat down for the longest, scariest, most agonizing rollercoaster of my life. English in high school wasn’t much of a concern to me. Teachers didn’t persist on teaching students good writing habits or the depth of what writing can go into, like they do in college.…

As a beginning reader young adult books captivated me with what, at the time, were intriguing and comprehensible plot lines. Thus began my love affair with books. Eventually, those plot lines became my adversary, when their simplicity triggered a soporific rendition of the book. It persisted until the gifts of classical literature unwrapped as I learned to penetrate, explore, and discover meanings in, for example, Dickens’ lengthy description of a clock tower did I truly find my beloved. Although young adult books had their place in my life by inspiring a love for reading, classical literature has opened up a whole new perspective, teaching me to seek out knowledge while still yielding enjoyment as I consume each book.…

In seventh grade, my reading experience went farther downhill. The teacher expected us to do projects reflecting over what we had read every time we finished a book, with a minimum of five per trimester. I hated doing these reflection projects, so my quantity of reading fell further to just five books every three months. However, the final nail in the coffin of my reading came in eighth grade. On the first day of school, the teacher informed us that the only genre we would be allowed to read for out reading logs, which were unnecessarily complicated, was nonfiction.…
