Every time I begin to write an essay for Intro to Visual Arts I always go back to “Starry Night, Vincent Van Gogh’s most famous piece of art.” Even though there are many works of art that I could write this essay about I chose to write this essay over “Starry Night” because I have a great understanding of this piece of art. In many of the “Starry Night” viewer’s eyes it is a beautiful piece of work, but in Vincent van Gogh’s eyes it is his worst piece of art. Van Gogh says the painting is not realistic enough, but “Starry Night is definitely one of the most amazing pieces of art I have ever seen. It makes the viewers feel they are looking at this image live. When arguing my thesis, one needs to use form and content. The definition of form is the physical attributes of the piece of art. These are the dimensions and the texture I described in the second paragraph. The definition of content is the narrative aspects of the piece of work. Content comes into play with the word beautiful. Van Gogh painted this painting from his mental mind in an asylum, and although Van Gogh never told anyone what this painting mean there were many interpretations. One person thought this could have been a religious painting, and Van Gogh could have been painting from Genesis. The story is Joseph had a dream of 11 stars, the sun, the moon that stand for his family bowing don to him. Vincent Van Gogh, whose work often reflects his restless spirit and mental illness, successfully described form and content in “Starry Night.”
To conclude the argument, the painting the most interest me to write about is Vincent Van Gogh’s “Starry Night.” It has great form and minimal content, goof use of space, a textured medium, and a beautiful image that transcends the viewer into another time and place.
