Dubowitz syndrome was first reported in 1965, by Victor Dubowitz, a British pediatric neurologist. It is a very rare genetic and developmental disorder. According to Huber, Houlihan, and Filter (2011), less than 200 cases have been documented in the literature since it was first reported by Victor Dubowitz in 1965. It is found to present equally in males and females, does not appear to be specific to any particular race or region, but has shown to exist within other members of the family. Dubowitz syndrome is characterized by growth retardation, microcephaly, mental retardation, behavioral disorder, eczema, facial appearance, and genital abnormailies. Receptive language is usually more severely impaired than expressive. Difficulty with mental tasks requiring imagination because they are “concrete thinkers.”
• Cognition o Cognition varies within among the individuals. Although, there is usually a deficiency in cognition. Mild to moderate mental retardation is common. Severe mental retardation is rare. While some children have normal intelligence. Short attention span and deficits in memory.
• Feeding o Exhibit feeding difficulties during infancy which include food refusal, vomiting, and diarrhea, and regurgitation.
• Behavior o Children will exhibit behavior problems and hyperactivity as well as tantrums. They improve significantly as the child approaches puberty. They may also exhibit extreme shyness.
Diagnosis
• Based primarily on inspection of facial appearance, growth records, and previous medical history.
Treatment
• There is not a cure for Dubowitz Syndrome, but the individual can benefit from the following therapies to help with the symptoms and problems: o Speech Therapy
• Addresses speech, language, social/self-help, voice, feeding/swallowing skills. o Physical
