After Atticus is appointed to defend Tom Robinson, a black man, the people of Maycomb show prejudice towards him. Atticus wants to provide Tom Robinson with a proper defense. The townspeople disagree with this and do not think that a black person should be given a proper defense, but Atticus does not care because he does not believe in racism or prejudice, he believes in equal rights. Many of the townspeople will say very mean things about Atticus. Many people do not believe that Atticus should help Tom because he is a black man, they think that black people do not deserve to be tried, that they are automatically guilty. Bob Ewell comes up to Atticus after the trial, spits in his face and says “‘Too proud to fight, you n___-lovin’ bastard?’... ‘No, too old’” (Lee 217). It is difficult for Tom because it is the 1930s in the South and Tom is black. People say very mean things to Tom and about Tom during the time of the trial. Mr. Gilmer suggests that Tom is guilty because he has a prior conviction. Mr. Gilmer says “‘What did the nigger look like when you got through with him?’... Atticus raised his head ‘it was a misdemeanor and it’s in the record’”(Lee 196). Because of Tom’s skin color, he is often mistreated by society. He is labeled to be a hurtful person because of the color of his skin. Tom Robinson flies from Mayella Ewell’s house after Mr. Ewell catches Mayella kiss Tom.
