As technicians we will constantly be communicating with others, our body language is part of that communication. Sometimes you might be talking to a client or co-worker and not understand what is being said. Summarizing and paraphrasing are two ways to help you find out what is being said while communicating. When summarizing you are picking out the key words and points, making what a person had said shorter. Then saying it back to them using what you heard. Paraphrasing is also a good technique it's when you repeat back what the client or co-worker has said but using your own words. By using these techniques clients will feel you are listening. Using both are great tools to help clarify what someone has said.
While working with others you may not think you have any prejudices or cultural differences but they may arise. If they do you should remember to show respect and treat everyone the same. A owner may be from a different country and bring a child with them to help translate. Or they may not have someone to help you might need communicate by pen and paper. You may not like children or get frustrated by writing but you cannot let that get in the way, a veterinarian technician needs to put that aside.
