A1) The story “Valor” by Judith Ortiz Cofer is many written in English but at the same time it incorporates many Spanish words. The title for Instance is in Spanish itself. “Valor” literally translates to “fly” which is the author portraying her literal feelings towards planning her future. As the story begins the author talks about comic books and how much she loves to read them. However, she doesn’t literally target comic books but rather implies her struggles as an immigrant. She tells the reader that she just wishes that she can have the life she once had before she became an immigrant. The title being in Spanish tells us a lot about the authors feelings and emotions. In the beginning, it is obvious that it is in first person narration. The narrator said “ You, who so well know the nature of my soul, will not suppose, however, that I have utterance to a threat”. The author uses the word “You” and it simply implies that the story has something to do with a monologue. The author is referring to him as if he knows him on a personal level and know what kind of a person he is. The term “You” could also mean that the narrator didn’t tell Fortunato that he was intending on getting revenge. It should have been obvious to him given the nature of the narrator. He says this because he takes pride in it and feels as if it’s an accomplishment on some level. As we go forward we find out that no one ever came to know of what happened for years. He tells his story with pride so people can know and he can get his revenge. The narrator reveals a lot about himself and his ego and …show more content…

Lane Dean is shown to be in a similar situation where his girlfriend gets pregnant very unexpectedly. The couple is shown to be very practicing and bound by religion. They fear that people will come to know of their mistakes and so the girl decides she will go through with an abortion. He is shown to think and observe a lot throughout the situation. He knows that he made one mistake by having sex with her before marriage and still questions whether he should make a second mistake by aborting a god given child. He stays patient and has faith in god and hopes for the best. Throughout the story I examined the character of Lane Dean and my thoughts were that this man has a very pure heart and he values life. Many men that get women pregnant only look towards abortion as a means of saving their reputation. However, that wasn’t the case with Lane Dean, he didn’t opt for abortion but rather he remained silent and took on the decision of his partner since it was her body. The moment she decided that she wanted to raise the baby and not abort he stood by her side and took responsibilities for his actions. This shows that he is a man of his word, he holds integrity and doesn’t come under the pressure of other people. He makes decisions based on his
