Utilitarianism
Utilitarianism simply claims the maximization of the utility of the society in terms of happiness and consider a morally right act if it creates or maximize the overall happiness of the society (Kymlicka, 2002). Utilitarianism has two features which distinct it and makes it more powerful moral theory
1. Secular based human well being
Utilitarianism is based on secular believes and human wellbeing is interoperated as happiness as noted by kymlicka that we can live happily without a God and how secular we becomes we still value the happiness (Kymlicka, 2002)
2. Consequentialism …show more content…
If we give equal consideration to the utility of each member of the society how can we neglect job opportunities? We can argue that what if that social construct creates more value for the female to house work specially cooking and baking and vice versa for the males? So utilitarian justified it by arguing the overall maximization of utility considering each member’s utility. Still does it means that such a social construct can stop someone to think and choose an opposite role, for example if a man want to work at home and want to cook or bake but he has to pay the opportunity cost on economic basis and also he has to face cultural pressure due to the selection of a position or role which is not socially accepted. Similarly if a woman wants to work as a chef or baker she has to face job restrictions to this job, rather relevant to her knowledge and capabilities but still cultural norms and pre-defined roles creates barriers for her.
Moreover Utilitarian view of preference satisfaction could argue in this case for female access to such a job opportunities and economic benefits from those opportunities to maximize their utility. But what If other member of such a male dominant society and their preferences argues against access of female jobs opportunities. Under that social construct if the preferences of female members also becomes to refrain them to peruse the opportunities in baking and chef job. Does this mean in such a case we should leave this opportunity issue as already utility is maximized? Utilitarianism looks a bit vague in this
