Case Name: United States v. Richard Milhous Nixon
During 1972 presidential campaign, Democratic National Headquarters in the Watergate Hotel was burglarized by five burglars. Investigation of the burglary revealed White House involvement, and several of Nixon associates were indicted for obstructing justice. The belief was that President was also involved in the burglary. After the conviction one of the convicted men had sent a letter to the presiding judge stating that payoffs were offered to the burglars for keeping silent. In 1973 Senate select committee was formed to find out as to who was behind the break-in. The investigation uncovered that White House was not only involved in the planning but also in covering up the burglary. This landmark court case firmly established that even the President of the United States has to abide by the law and cannot use his executive privilege to be excused from judicial inquiry. Some section of the society was not pleased because they believed the President that was elected with a popular majority vote was brought down by excessive power that tilted on one side. Impact on Decisions, Citizens and Laws I don’t think this case reversed any previous decisions made by the Supreme Court. Yes United States v. Nixon ruling made a lasting impact and it clearly stated that no one is above the law and excused from judicial review. Even the President cannot use the "Executive Privilege" and “Separation of Power” as a pretext for not sharing non-sensitive material evidence from the courts if required for criminal trial.
