The legend of Kuchisake-Onna has been around for a very long time, but there is no certain answer of where in first came to be. During this time Japan broke into a panic. Everyone was taking caution in the country at the time. For example, the police started to roam the streets more frequently. However, many believe that the scare started when school children told each other the story. After the legend became less popular in Japan, it popped up in South Korea in the late 20th century. All this buzz about Kuchisake-Onna might of caused more sightings or her. Apparently, the more you talk about her story, the more powerful Kuchisake becomes. There are two different versions of how the woman who is Kuchisake-Onna became the way she is. Earlier versions of the story says that she was the wife of a samurai who would constantly ask her husband if she was beautiful. One day he suspected she was cheating on him and became angry.
