As I wake up listening to the birds chirping I thought to myself what it would be like to be outside of the house and to make new friends. I had just moved into a new house with amazing foster parents. I just started going to a new school in New York City and the school was named Napoleon Academy. I had a hard time finding foster parents that would want to adopt me. Now, I have great foster parents named Bob and Rue. They are pretty rich if you ask me comparing to what my other parents provided me. The house is very big and I have very expensive clothes.

“Hey girl! Ready to go shopping for your wall paint and clothes? Rue questions.

“Uh, yeah, I think I'm ready. I just haven't decided what color I want my room yet..” I replied.

The door flung open, my dad picked me up running towards the basement door.

“What’s happening?” I screamed as tears rolled down my eyes.

“There’s a hurricane that has hit us. Your mother and I are gathering food supplies and a radio we will have to stay in the basement today.” Says Bill.

“Oh okay, is everything going to be alright?”

“We will hope for the best.”

As I enter the basement mom is making a bed for all three of us. I start to feel bad because my parents just lost their job, now we have a hurricane. Ugh! What’s the next worse thing to come.

A hand approaches the door handle swinging the door open having a loud scratching noise as always.

“Darling, are you awake?” Rue asks with a soft voice.

I open my eyes looking confused.

“What's wrong hun?” Rue asks looking puzzled.

“Oh nothing I must have had a bad dream.” I reply.

“What about?”

“I had a dream about us having a hurricane and we had to stay in the basement and we lost all of our money.”

“Oh, well are you ready to go shopping and get your room paint?”

‘Yes I am ready, I will be out in a few minutes.”

“Okay

Hurricane Rita was heading straight for Houston. Cronin and his wife packed up their kids and left. After six hours and fifty miles, they reached a scene that resembled an apocalypse: stores were picked clean of their goods, trash was everywhere, and families were sleeping not far from the road. Then, Cronin remembered that many of these people had guns, and he had children and a couple of thousand dollars with nothing to protect himself from the possibility of a dangerous person looking to steal. After his wife wouldn’t let him leave the car, Justin decided to turn around and head straight where the hurricane was predicted to hit.…

    Storm Warnings

There are always warning signs when change is coming, but there’s never a way to stop the change. Adrienne Rich explores this idea of knowledge without power in her poem, “Storm Warnings” as the narrator prepares herself and her home to withstand a storm. As I read this poem, I recognized the narrator’s sense of powerlessness but determination to press on in the face of adversity as something I have seen in the eyes of New Orleanians since August 29th, 2005. Our city was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina and sometimes I think that maybe if we had seen it coming earlier or closed that extra shutter it wouldn’t have been so bad, but the storm was coming no matter what anyone did and all we could do when it came was get out or get ready.…
