Savanna Taylor Ms. Teichman English 101 (15) 19 September 2016 ‘The Ghost Dance’ It is true to say that different communities in the world became rebellious to the European civilization especially on religious matters. In this case, also the Indians in Western America had to have a rebellious cult that would enlighten their struggle from the hands of the European invader. The Indians of America and mostly from Western Great Basin hence began a cult that was known as ‘the ghost dance’ or Natdia in native America (Weiser). The ghost dance emerged in the 1870s and was purposely brought about to unite the Indians and enable them rebel against the Indian reservations.…
I believe that the two people that are mostly responsible for the witchcraft is Tituba and Abigail. Because they were both dancing in the woods naked. Also that they had a fire in the middle with a cooking pot and Betty had fainted during them dancing. Their is many quotes that prove that Tituba and Abigail did witch craft together.…
The witch craze, during which hundreds of thousands of people were executed without trial, occurred during the renaissance and reformation in the late 1400s until the Scientific Revolution and Enlightenment in the 1700s. The “witches” were mostly female, and given no trial. During this time period, although people were beginning to get educated, the majority of people believed that women could be evil and crazy, but men couldn’t and were therefore better than women and could do what they desired, which included placing the blame of the world’s evils on women. This apparent evil nature of people, especially women, led to the death of over 100,000 victims accused of being witches, and their age and the spread of disease were the blamed causes of the supposed spread of witchcraft. Two Dominican monks, Kramer and Sprenger, claimed that women were naturally corrupted and evil, and that they were sexual beings, which supposedly led to the…
Knowing that African and Voodoo religion had been established in America when African slaves landed in Jamestown in 1619 28 we listen to Jessie Gaston Mulira: “The number of voodoo worshippers increased as more Africans arrived, first as indentured servants and later as slaves directly from Africa or through the West Indies….. With the influx of more Africans, voodoo became entrenched in the American colonies and later in the United States.” 29 Of course our keen interest is more fixed on the importing of slaves to Louisiana - and slaves in the St. Mary’s Parish area, which is the birthplace and home of our subject, William J. Seymour. Let’s review facts. Five hundred slaves were imported to Louisiana from Martinique, Guadeloupe and Saint Dominique…
Thinking back in American history, the most notable Native American event is the Trail of Tears. This event, for obvious reasons, is taught in every school and known by every American. Because of the cruel acts during this famous event, it is easy to single this one out and forget about many others. One of the major Native American events that is forgotten is the Ghost Dance of 1890. Like the Trail of Tears, the Ghost Dance effected the lives of the Native Americans; and by the end, a large amount lost their lives. Several things attributed to the onset of the Ghost Dance and there were numerous outcomes as a result of it.…
The Night Witches where a group of all female bomber pilots. They ranged in age from late teens to early twenties. This group made the Soviet Union the first nation to allow women to fly combat missions for the war efforts. The name “Night Witches” is a nickname that was given to them by the Nazi soldiers. This nickname was due to the fact that when they went near their target they would cut off their plane engines, the only sound heard was the “swooshing” of the planes; similar to that of a witches broom.…
In Leslie Marmon Silko’s, Ceremony, Emo liked to point out the “dusty wind,” the white people had left with them and to say “’Look what is here for [the Indians]’” (23). Emo’s attitude toward the wind and the white people shows a desire to experience the white peoples’ lives rather than his own culture. Throughout the novel, Silko establishes that this desire is a product of witchery that the Indians created. Moreover, throughout the novel the appearance of wind often correlates with the appearance of witchery.…

"Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live." (Book of Exodus, Chapter 22, Verse 18) And with that line from the Holy text came a whole new wave of paranoia. In the 1600's this fear over took New England. What could this fear be of exactly?…
All in all, witchcraft in New England and how it effected women was portrayed very well in Karlsen's book. I was impressed by the statistical methods that Karslen gathered and used in her book. Many of them supported her idea that women were the sole targets of these witchcraft accusations. I also liked her documentary set up in her study. She detailed these events that she gathered from a number of collections and set them in chronological order.…
