From this week’s reading, I found the quote above very interesting. This quote reminds me of the recent news about Trump administration preparing to challenge admission policies which prefer minorities over white students in US higher education (Sanches, 2017). In this case, Trump administration is trying to shut the door on affirmative action in college administration. Universalism refers to the belief that whites consider themselves as outside of race, hence, they could represent all human (DiAngllo, 2012). Whites are so concerned with their own interests and well-being that they fail to consider their role and influence in the community. In the movie we watched in lecture, the privileged whites were trying to separate themselves from the community with the claim that people should consider themselves as individuals and protect their rights and interests, which connects with individualism mentioned in the DiAnglo article. The privileged whites are creating segregation and leaving the other people behind with fewer resources. Whites are blaming the Baton Rouge community for not succeeding on their own whereas the whites take away most of the resources and funding to build their own city. Whites believe that racism doesn't exist as long as they are not participating in action (DiAnglo, 2012). One of the white men in the video even states that we have a black president, hence, race problem is solved. People are so afraid of talking about racism because it might offend someone in the discourse. Therefore, people are avoiding the problem and simply pretending the problem is
