4. Jolles mentions eight different personality types that may attend a training session. Name two personalities he mentions and explain how you, as a trainer, would deal with each in your workshop.
1) The Loner Trainee
2) The Quite Trainee
I would handle both in a similar manner. I would make sure I focused on those two trainees when doing my icebreaker and hands on activities.
5. Based on the suggestions of Jolles, name two ways to determine the knowledge level of the trainees in your workshop? 1) Icebreakers 2) Poll your audience 6. Do you agree with the approach of the author regarding whether the trainer should be in the room immediately prior to a workshop? Explain why you either agree or disagree with his strategy. I think the trainer should be able to be in the room prior to the workshop. …show more content…
I think they would go and mingle with the trainees and be friendly. If I was a trainee and my facilitator walked in and immediately started teaching, I would be less interested. I would pay more attention if they would have been talking to the group before getting to know us.
7. Briefly explain the purpose of using the “UPPOPPR model” when developing a training session.
UPPOPPR stands for Utility, Product/Goal, Process, Objective, Process Justification, Proof of Ability, and Review. When developing a training session you should try to hit all of these points because that is where all of the important information is. Without touching on each part you are going to leave an important piece of information out. It is here to help you cover all of your material.
8. Using the UPPOPPR model, how does Jolles correlate the concept of “utility” with his “ W.I.F.M.” strategy?
Utility and W.I.F.M. go hand in hand because Utility is showing the trainee why it is necessary that they are there. Many times they do not want to be there and that is where the “What is in it for me?” comes along. You have to give them the objectives immediately so they do not feel like they are wasting their time. 9. Jolles names twenty techniques for maintaining interest of the attendees. Based on his suggestions, name five techniques you to plan to incorporate in your training session. 1) Use your voice effectively 2) Keep moving while you talk 3) Distribute handouts 4) Ask questions 5) Conduct small group activities 10. Explain what Jolles recommends with regard to the frequency of breaks in adult training sessions. You should not do one everyday at 10:00 A.M. if it is needed at 9:00 A.M. You should add a break when the trainees need it. 11. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using “fact-based questions” in training sessions? Advantage: It is a fact. No one has to be put under the pressure of sharing their own opinion. Disadvantage: Can undo a lot of what has been done (putting trainees on the spot). 12. Jolles mentions the “reverse technique” for asking questions. Explain how this technique differs from the “relay-technique” of asking questions. • Relay is asking the question to the whole class and then going around to the trainees getting their own opinion. • Reverse is when the trainee asks the presenter a questions and they respond back with another question. 13. Explain the author’s rationale as to whether a pointer should be used in a presentation. The author says no because you will end up fidgeting with it and become distracting for the trainees. 14. Jolles mentions, “positioning” when he illustrates how to use visual aids. Give two examples of how this concept it used. 1) You should be positioned beside so you won’t obstruct the trainees view. 2) Be positioned on the side of your dominant arm so you will not have to reach across the board. 15. You are designing a workshop entitled, Eliminating Anxiety in Speaking Situations. What suggestions, from Jolles book, will help you prepare for your own anxiety when giving the presentation? 1) Welcome to the Club- it helps to remind myself that I am not the
