“Two Ways to Belong in America” shows that people in the same culture can have different point of views on the same topic. At the beginning of the story it says “This is a tale of two sisters…. Who lived in the United States for some 35 years, but who find themselves on different sides in the current debate over the status of immigrants.” This shows us that people who have lived in somewhat of the same culture still can end up having different ideas. The reason the two sisters have different point of views because they are exposed to different types of cultures due to the people that they married this is said unt the story during two parts, “Mira married an Indian student…” and “I married a fellow student, an American of Canadian parentage.” These quotes from the story show how people even though grew up the same way can have different views because the discovered other opinions and facts. “Everyday Use” shows that learning more information can change your point of view on your own culture. In the story Dee (Wangero), believes that she was named after an oppressor, or a slave owner, after finding out about slavery. “I couldn’t bear it any longer, being named after the people who oppressed me”. Some people in the same family can think differently about their family aswell, due to the fact that one of the people got exposed to information that they think applies to them. “Your heritage….You ought to make something of yourself, too… But from the way you and Mama still live, you’d never know it.” …show more content…
