Tuffy’s Pet Foods, a KLN Family Brand, has recently experienced issues in their operations, when the Ohio Department of Agriculture revealed the presence of Salmonella in one of their products. The manufacturer of the “super premium” pet foods, boasts they have been manufacturing pet foods for over 50 years and are dedicated to providing quality products through the enforcement of strict quality control measures. Apparently, these strict quality control measures are not quite as effective as the company had hoped. In February 2015, the U.S Food and Drug Administration announced, “Tuffy's Pet Foods, Inc. is voluntarily recalling specific lots of 4 lb. bags of Nutrisca Chicken and Chick Pea Recipe Dry Dog Food because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella” (FDA: U.S. Food and Drug Administration, 2015).

Acquiring the right supplier is just the beginning. Pet food companies must ensure in-house operations are robust and that strict protocols are in place to prevent contamination. To control in-house contaminants, these companies must ensure standard protocols and quality control tests are performed routinely. Cleaning procedures must be stringent and take place regularly, without fail. Equipment should be inspected regularly to ensure proper working order. Finally, these companies should develop a protocol to prevent recalls. Such protocol would hold product from being shipped until all testing has been completed and the results are confirmed as negative. This protocol would prevent potentially contaminated or otherwise faulty pet food from reaching pet owners, thus eliminating the need to be
