As the baby boomers continue to age and members of our society continue to live longer due to technological and medical advances, there will be a greater need for informal caregivers. Numerous working caregivers that have a fulltime or part-time job are forced to miss work an average of 6.6 days per year (Witter, 2001). “According to Gallup research, it is estimated that the cost of lost productivity due to absenteeism among full-time working caregivers is more than $25 billion dollars annually (Witters, 2011). The Theory of Caregiver Stress can and has affected the professional and economic industry greatly. “Patient satisfaction affect reimbursement. HCAHPS survey scores are one of the measures the federal government use to calculate incentive payments under the Medicare Hospital Value-Based Purchasing program” (Aston, 2012 p. 50). In order to remain in business, hospitals are dependent on reimbursements from Medicare and additional commercial insurances. To receive reimbursement, a hospital must produce high HCAHPS scores.
