I had a hard time picking an event to attend for this assignment because I wanted to attend something that would be meaningful for me, not just a menial task for an assignment. In “Working at McDonald’s,” Amitai Etzioni argues that McDonald’s is “bad for your kids” and doesn’t provide essential skills that they can utilize in the future. The author states McDonald’s is not educational and kids are not participating in school activities as working part time at McDonald’s is diverting their attention away from essential learning experience. The author goes on to explain teens are working long hours and supervision is often “tight and woefully inappropriate.” For example, to keep costs down “teens are supervising teens with often no adult on the premises.” Etzioni suggests parents should not assume teen employment is educational and can be easily abused.…

A motif that haunts the months of college applications and preparation is the daunting idea of seniors entering into the "real world." An alleged, new realm of reality that discredits the validity of the last few years in high school, not to mention the three before that and all the experiences previously. This concept coincides seamlessly with the idea that college is a beacon of newfound adulthood. During a certain period in life, an individual must make the decision to follow the path of an outstanding career or settle with a temporary job. Most people may view a job as the safer choice; however, they do not realize the better life a career has to offer. Essentially, to teenagers making these life decisions, they confirm with a job because it’s quick and easy to get, it requires minimum training, and it serves as a starting point. As for a career, it may seem as years of unnecessary education, it can be physically demanding, and expensive. Age Discrimination Whether they seem too old or too young, people will be stereotyped by their age and this leads to discrimination in the work place. Employers tend to categorize older job applicants as slow, fragile and unable to learn new tricks, while the view younger people as irresponsible, inexperienced and not devoted. Being denied an employment opportunity because of an inaccurate, biased opinion is simply unfair and age discrimination in employment can cause more problems than one might realize.
