According to Emile Durkheim there are four different types of suicide. They are egoistic suicide, altruistic suicide, anomic suicide, and fatalistic suicide. Although I personally have never thought about committing suicide, my life has changed because of two girls who decided to take their own lives. I grew up in a small town called Philomath, Oregon so everybody knew everybody. In October of 2013 a freshman named Lilly Stagner committed suicide. We weren’t even acquainted with one another, but I saw her in the halls each day and she seemed like she was full of life with her cheerful attitude. On the morning of October 23 something didn’t feel normal. The usual atmosphere of Philomath high had somehow felt unusual on that particular day. In first period our teacher read us a letter about how Lilly had passed away and that there were counseling centers open for people who needed to talk. Although I didn’t know Lilly personally I still felt an overwhelming sense of sadness when I heard the news. Another suicide that happened at my school was on January 6th, 2014. As I was pulling in to LBCC that morning I checked my Facebook and the first post I saw was “Rest in Peace Jesyka Forrest.” My jaw dropped. I couldn’t believe that this bubbly, artistic, and outgoing girl had taken her own life.
