Comparing Oedipus, Sophocles, And Euripides

There were three great tragedians in Greek Society: Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides. (1) Sophocles’s works were between Aeschylus and Euripides. Sophocles had written 123 plays during his life is the information we can get from Suda, a 10th-century encyclopedia. However, only seven of the plays were completely being saved. One of the plays that were being saved is Oedipus at Colonus, which was the last play Sophocles wrote. (2) Sophocles’s life experiences had influenced how he wrote his plays. During his lifetime, it was the period when Person War continued. Due to the reason, he mentions many gods and goddess in the play. (3) Meanwhile, because of Sophocles’s involvement in Athenian's politics, most of the plays are related to the politic during the time period. In the same way, since Oedipus at Colonus was the play Sophocles wrote in older age, one of the main themes of the play, old age, was being created. In Oedipus the king, Oedipus did not know about the fate at first. When he notices the gate, he could not accept. (6) Yet, through what he had gone through when he was outside of Thebes, Oedipus acknowledged the importance of fate in his life in Oedipus at Colonus. Although Oedipus made some changes, his physical old had already happened. This is the reality when people get old, just as Sophocles. Because elderly people had more experiences compare to youth, they know what should do and what should not do. Meanwhile, the decline of their bodies is unchangeable. This means that what they can do is being limited. Sophocles created a character, Oedipus, that gave audiences idea about what may people be like when we get old by using the theme of old
