Anthem Essay
In today’s society, individuals are allowed to branch out and explore science and technology. That is why we are technologically advanced unlike the totalitarian society in Anthem. Equality 7-2521’s society was primitive because they were not allowed to be individuals. In the novella by Ayn Rand, individuality is used to show why science and technology is controlled by a totalitarian society.
All of the citizens of the collectivist society in Anthem were denied individuality. The rulers of the society made thinking and inventing a collectivist activity because they did not want anyone to gain knowledge and overturn their society. The leaders of Equality’s society were afraid the citizens would gain knowledge and eventually overthrow them .The leader wanted a society where everyone had a place and not one “individual” had power. The society Equality lived in was primitive because it limited the power of individuals. All technological and scientific advancements in their society had to be agreed upon by all members in the Home of Scholars. “Many men in the Homes of the Scholars have had strange new ideas in the past, said Solidarity 8-1164, but when the majority of their brother Scholars voted against them, they abandoned their ideas, as all men must" (need page). They were living in a primitive society because it took awhile to come up with new creations that every member of the Home of Scholars agreed on. They would be much more advanced if inventing was not a collectivist activity. Our society today is where it is because of inventors that keep inventing even when told their idea was not correct or wrong. People of our society kept inventing when they were told no because they wanted to solve problems ,whereas the society Equality lived in thought they solved all problems with collectivism when in reality, they did not. Equality had a thirst for knowledge in a society where there was a drought of knowledge. He wanted knowledge so badly that he stole material and went against the rules of the society and experimented in a tunnel by himself. “We have stolen glass vials and powders and acids from the Home of the Scholars. Now we sit in the tunnel for three hours each night and we study. We melt strange metals, and we mix acids, and we cut open the bodies of the animals which we find in the City Cesspool” (need page). Equality alone discovered light in a short period of time, whereas the Home of Scholars only had discovered how to make candles. Equality tested the idea of individualism when creating his light, but he was shut down because the society leaders did not want individualism therefore their society was primitive. Every man of the Home of Scholars had to agree upon an idea for it to be tried and tested.
