My chosen group is Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People. In Australia, there are two completely different cultural groups made up of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and there are also over 250 unique languages spread across the Indigenous land. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders have individual societies and cultures but their experiences with oppression, dispossession and colonization in their home country shows quite a strong bond between the two cultures. The Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act (2003) and the Torres Strait Islander Cultural Heritage Act (2003) both state that the main objective is to have effective recognition, protection and conservation of cultural heritage. These laws have been put in place to protect the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and make the feel part of Australia again. Some examples of times when people have discriminated against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders is when well known AFL player was booed for celebrating a goal with a cultural dance. AFL is well loved by everyone all over the country, but by booing a champion s port star of Australian origin, they are booing one of their own. They would be able to learn about ground ovens, baking in the ashes, roasting on hot coals, grinding, steaming, boiling and pounding. These are traditional techniques used by the Indigenous Aboriginals. Students will prepare a small meal between groups using the techniques they have learnt about. Students then will be able to present what they have prepared to the large group and tell them how they have cooked it.
This day is for learning and education purposes only. In no way is it to offend Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The environment is respectful and courteous to the Indigenous Australians and it gives students the opportunity to learn about their cultures. It also provides students a different perspective on other cultures and gives them empathy relating to discrimination in the world. By doing this program within a school environment, it creates a safe and welcoming community for people of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descents because everybody understands each
