The Reign of Terror was a time period when a lot of people were executed in a short amount of time. The Reign of Terror lasted less than two years, from the execution of Louis XVI in January 1793 to late July 1794. During those eighteen months, more than 20,00 French people were put to death by guillotine. The question is whether or not this behavior by the revolutionary French government was justified. The Reign of Terror was justified. This claim can be supported by three reasons: the threats did require it, the methods weren’t too extreme, and the ideals of the revolution weren’t violated,
The first reason the Reign of Terror was justified was the threats the France received required it. In the Timeline of Terror it states, “the government passed the Law of Suspects which limited the rights of the accused.” This was required to keep the inside threat to minimum. Also in the Inside Threat people went against the revolution and the limited right would help the people of France with this threat. In La Guillotine it shows people getting executed by Decapitation. This was a quick and painless way for a person to be executed. There could have been worst torture methods used to execute people but decapitation was quick and easy. In the Triumph and Terror people set up watch committees to ferret out traitors of the revolution. This was used to stop the growth of the counter revolution.
