To Kill A Mockingbird Portia Analysis

In To kill a mockingbird by Harper Lee the character Atticus is similar to William Shakespeare's play the Merchant of Venice's character Portia as they both proved to be intelligent. Portia had chosen to represent Antonio, Bassanio’s closest friend, in court. Antonio was in great debt to Shylock and owed him a pound of flesh. Portia tells Shylock Why, this bond is forfeit, /And lawfully by the jew may claim a pound of flesh, to be by him cut off nearest to the merchant's heart (Shakespeare 4.1.228-231). Furthermore, Portia proceeds by manipulating Shylock to take the pound of flesh without any blood spilt in the process, she says if thou dost shed one drop of Christian blood thy lands and goods/ Are by the law of Venice confiscate. …show more content…
Mr Ewell had called out Atticus for defending Tom Robinson by calling him a “nigger lover” (Lee 189). Atticus had done his best to prove Toms innocence by presenting to the court the fact that Tom’s left arm was cripple and that Mayella, the women he was accused of raping, was attacked by someone who was left handed. Scout, Atticus's daughter says his left arm was crippled and it was twelve inches shorter than his right I could see that it was no use to him” (158). Atticus had taken the fact that Mr Ewell had a dominant left arm and proved that Tom was clearly not Mayella's attacker. Furthermore, the judge had great trust in Atticus and had personally asked to take on Tom Robinson case hoping that Tom has a fair fight in the case. Atticus explains to Mr Underwood by saying, “ I couldn't let him down, he was innocent and I am going to prove it.” (96). Judge Taylor knew that Atticus was a great lawyer and had wanted him to represent a man that he too felt was innocent. Atticus had intelligently chosen a case that was impossible and made it work, he found a way to use the simple fact of Mr Ewell being left handed and proved that it was not possible for Tom Robinson to create harm with a crippled

In ‘’To Kill a Mockingbird’’ by Harper Lee Atticus Finch tells his speech in the court room and uses rhetorical devices to convince the people in court that Tom is not guilty. Furthermore, Finch wants the people in the court room to relize that Tom is not guilty and that we are all equal and that our skin color doesn’t matter because that doesn’t make us who we are. Atticus in his speech uses persuasive appeal to get the people in the court room’s attencion. A persuasive appeal that Atticus uses is logos to appeal to the audiences sense of reason and logic.…

Throughout this journal, I predict that Tom Robinson will end up being guilty. One can see that Tom Robinson could be pronounced guilty for a few reasons. The first reason is when someone talked to Tom he did not respond and he just stayed silent. In the text it states, “the spectators were quiet, but the defendant said something. Atticus whispered to him, and Tom Robinson was silent” (Lee 233).…

As Atticus strives to defend Tom Robinson, he also uses several appeals to make his closing argument convincing to the jury and the audience. One appeal that Atticus used in his closing argument is “In the name of god, do your duty”. This shows how Atticus used his emotions to try to convince the jury and the audience that Tom is not guilty. Another appeal that Atticus used in his closing argument is “All men are created equal”. This shows how Atticus used his emotions to tell the jury and the audience that just because of Toms nationality, it doesn’t mean that he is the guilty one who raped and harmed Mayella Ewell.…

In To Kill a Mockingbird, Mayella is powerful based on class, gender, and race. The book shows us how she does have power, and gives supporting evidence. In this time period, in a small racist Southern community during the 1930’s, all of the categories listed are very important and contributes a lot to a person. Each category has its own reasonings why Mayella is powerful. Mayella has much more power than the other person in their situation, because of all of the listed evidence.…

Atticus figured that Robert E. Lee Ewell was left-handed while he was writing his name that he had to be the one who actually abused Mayella from her bruises that are visible on her body. It couldn't be Tom Robinson because his left arm can not be in use or not function properly. When both of these two characters were in court they…

He is on trial for being an accused rapist, but the audience notices something about him, his left arm is crippled , Atticus is in the testimony of Mayella, he explains to the court “He got it caught in a cotton gin...when he (a) was boy...like bled to death… tore all the muscles from his bones”(page 249). Him telling this to the court shows that he is incapable of physically harming Mayella Ewell. Another example is when Scout, Jem and Dill are present at the case listening to the testimony of Tom Robinson . Scout realizes the reasoning for Mayella to have went below her skin color to feel a type of connection with someone ,the explanation is shown by Scout thinking “As Tom Robinson gave his testimony, it came to me that Mayella Ewell must have been the loneliest person in the world”(page 250).…

He proves that Bob Ewell was responsible for the crime. He gave it his best shot that he could but the jury was so caught up on Tom Robinson’s skin color. Atticus was not surprised by the conviction but was mad at how racism in Maycomb county can overrule the Justice System. In court he talks about how the jury would buy into the assumption that all blacks are evil and immoral. He then states that this assumption is false and that all men are created equal no matter what skin color.…

Before the story has begun, the African American is already accused of raping a white, nineteen year old Mayella Ewell. Many townspeople of Maycomb believe that Robinson is not responsible for his crime because he is a hard-working and well-respected man. On the other hand, they disrespect and distrust the prosecutor, Mayella Ewell, because she belongs to a poor, disgraceful “white trash” family who lives by the town’s dump. The second evidence that proves Tom Robinson’s innocence is found in Mr. Ewell’s testimony on the rape. Mr. Ewell, Mayella’s father and one of the witnesses of the incident, tells Atticus, the lawyer of Tom Robinson, that he does not call a doctor for Mayella on that day.…

“Atticus has used every tool available to free men to save Tom Robinson, but in the secret court of men’s hearts, Atticus had no case. Tom was a dead man the minute Mayella opened her mouth and screamed” (Lee 245). Although Tom had done no wrong against Mayella, his skin color mattered more to the jury than his right to a fair trial. It became clear to Scout how Maycomb thinks of negroes contemptuously. They sit in their own section of the courthouse, and live in their own separate part of town among themselves and the Ewell’s.…

The author includes this theme to attempt to educate her readers that forming ideas about people, especially during a time of negative thinking towards a specific group of people, is not morally correct and people should make more of an effort to get to know someone before judgment. In a novel that attempts to lead people away from prejudgment of African American citizens, there are many cases in which African Americans are spoken negatively about without a reason. One of the main events that takes place in To Kill a Mockingbird is the trial between Tom Robinson, Mayella Ewell, and Bob Ewell. Mr. Ewell claimed to have seen Tom Robinson raping Mayella, Bob’s daughter, and decided to take the case to court. Before the trial, Tom was in a jail cell in the middle of the town when a lynch mob approached.…

Can you imagine trying to defend a black man in the South during the 1930’s when racism was still extremely prevalent? Well that is exactly what Atticus Finch did in To Kill A Mockingbird. Tom Robinson was a black man accused of rape. Atticus, being a lawyer, took on the role of defending him. It was known that Tom had a mangled left arm and had no purpose in doing the accused crime, but in the end racism won, over and the court 's decision was guilty purely based on skin color.…
