The first subject to Atticus's love is Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson is an innocent black man who is being accused of a crime he did not commit. Atticus is defending this man in court, knowingly taking the risk that he will be publicly criticized. The children of Atticus and the innocence of Tom is what drives him to take this case. Dubose acted towards Atticus. Mrs. Dubose was a sick elderly with absolutely no filter to catch her rudeness. Atticus brushes her hurtful insults off like they made no impact at all. However, this is the opposite for Atticus's son, Jem, who demolishes her flowers to defend his father. This leads to an eye opening discovery into who Mrs. Dubose really is and the hardships she is struggling through. Atticus looks up to Mrs. Dubose, even though all the things she said. Atticus see himself as in her position, he is defending a case he knows that he will loose and Mrs. Dubose is trying to get off of morphine even though she knows that she will die anyway. They are both showing a hard work of effort towards something that that will ultimately lead to failure.
