The traditional saying is to be in someone shoes but Atticus takes it one step further. Instead of shoes he says skin. This is saying to really understand someone's perspective you don't just think about their perspective you really internalize it. You think what that they would think and everything in between to really understand where they're coming from. You need to actually feel where they're coming from. To me this kind of is fitting for the book because if you dig deeper it fits the topic of racism. Walter is black and Scout treat him different not only because of that but it might play a factor in it. Atticus want Scout to kind of be able to see the struggles of different kinds of people not just yourself. This is not limited to people of different skin color and he wanted her to know that.
