Three Characters Who Have Changed While venturing on an unexpected journey, someone will learn and change as a person wether it be for better or worse. Absalom Kumalo, James Jarvis, and Stephen Kumalo discover through time, this exact thing in Alan Paton's novel: Cry, the Beloved Country. Frightened at first, experiencing pain, and suffering but emerging as a new person with understanding proves to be the path each character will take to discover who they really are. John Kumalo, entering the world as a clueless man discovers the harsh truth of South Africa, Absalom Kumalo, wanting to leave behind a life of crime in his past may end up being too late, and James Jarvis, a prejudice man discovers through his late son, the quality and meaning of life In Ndotsheni. …show more content…
Absalom was never truly a bad person, he was simply caught up in the hype of Johannesburg and made friends with the wrong people. He shot Arthur Jarvis without thinking, he was simply scared. He vows to not lie, nor do anything evil anymore, he believed it was Satan whom inspired his actions. While spending time in jail, he comes to an understanding of what he has done, he prays, repents, writes to his father Stephen how he won't be shown mercy and he will be hanged with a full understanding and acceptance of his punishment. He included in his letter that if he could return to Ndotsheni, he would never leave. Absalom discovered through his wrong actions, he could be a better person, he was lead into the wrong direction by the wrong people and vowed to change himself for the better, even if it meant he had only a few
