As I walked through the halls of what seemed to be the Ancient Bradley Academy, an old school that had begun as a white’s only school and had famous graduates such as President James K. Polk and Senator John Bell, I couldn’t help but be amazed at the old Civil War artifacts that had been collected as well as some of the displays that had been set up. Although Bradley Academy was initially a school for rich, higher class, white men, it later opened its doors to the Black community becoming one of the first African American schools. As I learned Bradley Academy provided a top of the line education for 24 dollars a session and some firewood, and there was only one teacher to teach all the core subjects and some. Finally in 1884 the academy was…

Human Rights Watch tells the story of Thomas Barrett in Georgia. Unemployed and living off food stamps, Barrett was out on probation and ordered to pay a $200 fine for stealing a $2 can of beer from a convenience store. On top of that, Sentinel Offender Services, LLC, the company administering Barrett's probation, charged him $360 per month in supervision and monitoring fees despite the fact that Barrett's only source of income was money earned by selling his blood plasma. Barrett skipped meals to try to make payments to Sentinel. But he still fell behind and eventually owed the company over $1000 in fees—five times more than the $200 fine imposed by the court.…

They responded enthusiastically, excited to shake off the chains of worldly influence and forge ahead to create a new identity for America filled…

Midterm Exam – The Child and the Curriculum John Dewey’s The Child and the Curriculum, written over a century ago, poses a question that can still prove relevant to teachers in this day and age. His primary question that he attempts to tackle in his paper, is simple: should education be tailored to a child’s specific needs, or to a set curriculum? Throughout the paper, he argues that the tug of war between child and curriculum is ultimately futile; choosing one over the other will still prove detrimental. Ultimately, Dewey says “all depends upon the activity which the mind itself undergoes in responding to what is presented from without” (Dewey, 1906, p.39). In other words, Dewey believes that experience is the key to learning, and the ideal curriculum should focus on…
