How can a student try and sound out words and try to read without knowing the all the possible sounds that letter could make? In the regard of teaching phonics, the teacher has the control of how the lesson is taught to some extent. According to the article, “Teachers’ own frontline experiences about what works, but also politics, economics, and the popular wisdom” (Sitthitikul p. 114), teachers who have experience will know what works and what doesn’t when it comes to teaching phonics, but they also have to follow the standards that have been created by the government. Phonemes are also discussed as to why they are important. In the article, “Theoretical Review of Phonics Instruction for Struggling/Beginning Readers of English” written by Pragasit Sitthitikul it is stated why phonemics are so important, “Phonemic awareness refers to the ability to focus on and manipulate phonemes in spoken words… an awareness of phonemes is key to understanding the logic of the alphabetic principle” (Sitthitikul p. 117). I knew that phonics were one of the crucial points to elementary age schooling, but I never realized that students can struggle so much with learning phonics based on how the instruction of phonics is given. If a student does not understand how a letter sound fits into a word, then that can hurt them later in life. I will try my best to make sure that my students have a mastery of their letter sounds no matter what elementary grade I am teaching.
