Theodore Roosevelt's Achievements

Theodore Roosevelt Jr. was one of the greatest United States presidents. He had many achievements and was loved by the country. He was one of America 's most active and adventurous presidents. He was a wise man that said many important things that we remember today. One of his most famous quotes is “The only safe rule is to promise little, and faithfully to keep every promise; to ‘speak softly and carry a big stick.” This quote was from Teddy 's Autobiography in 1913. He was also quoted saying “Laws are enacted for the benefit of the whole people, and cannot and must not be construed as permitting discrimination against some of the people. I am president of all the people of the United States, without regard to creed, color, birthplace, occupation or social condition.” This quote was from his public statement on September 29,1903. He always treated other fairly. Although he lived a fairly short life, Theodore Roosevelt charged into the 20th century as one of the most motivating and active United States presidents ever to live. Theodore Roosevelt Jr. was born on October 27, 1858, in New York City. Teddy’s father, Theodore Roosevelt Sr., was a very successful merchant who specialized in the importation of glass products. His father had a great impact on Teddy. He felt it was important to teach Teddy his values like teaching his family not to be selfish, cruel, lazy, scared, or untruthful. Teddy’s mother, Martha, was a stay home mom taking care of her four children. His wealthy family was of Dutch ancestry and involved in many civic affairs. Teddy started out life enduring a lot of sickness. He was born with extremely bad eyesight and was thin and sickly because he was afflicted with a long series of childhood diseases. Most of his serious sickness was asthma which periodically constricted his throat and left him gasping for breath. Asthmatic attacks struck him time after time during his childhood and youth. Teddy tried to get treatment, but it did not help very much, although fresh outside country air helped lessen his asthmatic attacks. He was so sick that he could not attended school and had to sit in a chair all night to help him breath. Teddy’s dad had him lift weights and work out to help lessen the asthmatic attacks and make him stronger. Teddy 's dad helped him get stronger so he could go on to school. His mom homeschooled him and helped him read and write before he went off to college. Teddy loved school. He went to Harvard University College where he spent many hours studying. He also rowed, boxed, wrestled, and danced. Teddy also loved to travel. He traveled to Europe and Egypt and many other places. He also wanted to save land for animals to run free on. He decide to triple the amount of land in the reserves. He had many national parks such as Greater Lake in Oregon, Crater Lake, Wind Cave, Sullys Hill, Platt National Park, Mesa Verde, and Yosemite National Park. He also had 18 National Monuments, such as Devil’s Tower, El Morro, Montezuma Castle, Petrified Forest, Chaco Canyon, Lassen Peak, Cinder Cone, Gila Cliff Dwellings, Tonto, Muir Woods, Grand Canyon, Pinnacles, Jewel Cave, Natural Bridges, Lewis and Clark Caverns, Tumacacori, Wheeler, and Mount Olympus. Teddy 's face is carved into Mt. Rushmore along with George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Abraham Lincoln. People loved Teddy they adored him he was one of America 's most famous presidents and still is to this day. Teddy even has some parks in honor of him.
Once when Theodore Roosevelt was asked if he was strong enough to go through a strenuous campaign, he told them he felt “as strong as a bull moose.” He once had a close brush with death on October 14, 1912 when he was coming from his hotel in Milwaukee on the way to make a speech. Roosevelt was shot in the chest by an anti third-term fanatic. Lucky his eyeglass case and the thick manuscript of his speech saved his life.
