In Shinny Game That Melted the Ice the puck represents the development of the brotherhood and journey to belonging. It says “the puck a forgotten thing tucked away in the corner of the net.” (Wagamese 82), this represents that they have officially achieved the relationship they were looking for and he has found the belonging that he has desired for a long time. Because of the series of events that led to this moment, they were able to reconnect through a mutual love of hockey. The main component of hockey is the puck, without the puck there would be no game to play. It is very suitable that the item that rekindled their friendship would be the thing that would represent their long awaited brotherhood with one another. In Dancer the main symbol is Clarissa’s dreams. When she first arrived every night she would have terrible dreams that represented her loneliness and anxiety. When she found dancing and felt a spark of hope and belonging the dreams went away. At night she would no longer scream because the loneliness and fear could no longer plague her. She finally found a place where she could trust and love. A second symbol in Dancer is her clothes. In the start of the story it says “she came with everything she had in a paper bag.” (Sears 18).
