Graff articulates how society views and acts towards homosexuals by utilizing historical literary references. Logos is found in most of her article hence many of the stories of these victims need factual background. One example of factual research is the case of Tyra Hunter, who was treated inhumanly and was discriminated by her gender. “In August 1995 Tyra Hunter’s car crashed in Washington DC. When firefighters paramedics cut away her dress and found male genitals, they laughed and mocked her. She bled to death in the hospital. In August 2000 a jury awarded Hunter’s mother $1.75 million in a wrongful-death action.” (Graff 224). The author could have easily just stated the victim's name and the situation but she went more in depth and evaluated the situation. By stating facts to what accordingly happened in this incident, this makes the author more credible to her argument which gender and sex should be rethinked by society. Graff went in depth so the reader could connect with her words and not only understand the situation but feel compassionate for a stranger. Throughout the article she voices her own emotions in a placid matter, like how she connects with the situations these people have experienced. Graff meaningfully uses pathos to persuade or connect with the reader that gender inequality should have a solution. Pathos is designed to invoke empathy from the reader and to make the reader understand the author's message in their argument.
