Challenge yourself by going out of your comfort zone is the most important out of the three. On his travels, Chris meets a man named Ron Franz who becomes very attached to him. Franz was an old man who never really got out of his house much until Chris came along. In a letter sent to Franz, Chris wrote, “Ron, I really hope that as soon as you can you will get out of Salton City, put a little camper on the back of your pickup, and start seeing some of the great work that God has done here in the American West”(58).Chris convinced Franz to be his own person and go out and explore the world. He wanted to get Franz out of the simple comfort of his home and have him really live. This was quite a big and challenging change for him but he listened to Chris’ advice, and did it. Franz enjoyed the change in his life, and became more self-confident which is what Krakauer wants to emphasize. Franz took a risk by taking Chris’s advice, however it payed off because he was more happy and more self
