Irony, it’s a strange thing isn’t it? Think about it, the exact definition of irony is: a state of affairs or event that seems deliberately contrary to what one expects and is often amusing as a result. In The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, Liesel’s case, the irony of her obsession with stealing books, is that she didn’t even know how to read to begin with.

It was mentioned in the beginning of the book that she didn’t know how to read, because it states “ when he made her point out any words she could read and actually say them, there were only three- the three main German words for ‘the’” (Zusak 66) which proves she didn’t have a formal education and is illiterate.
