The song Guaranteed is a song that shares Chris’s feeling about his his inability to maintain close relationships, his opposition to material possessions and his feelings in general. Guaranteed would fit into the scenes from the book after Chris has started his adventure and is making his way to Alaska walking, hitchhiking and living freely. The song mentions Chris’s inability to maintain relationships with the line “Don't come closer or I'll have to go.” The song may represent Chris’s feeling after leaving his sister, Wayne Westerberg, Jan and Bob, or Franz; all of which are people he left behind. In the book, McCandless writes that “You are wrong if you think Joy emanates only or principally from human relationships” (page 57), which is supported by this song.
