This particular study abroad program encompasses so much of the history and craft that goes into my major. As an artist of the theatre, I need to be aware of the historical significance of theatre and the stories that have been written. Seeing, reading, and visiting monuments and plays will make the history that I’ve learned in class tangible. Attending productions will further allow my creativity as an artist to flourish with diverse genres of theatre that will be available on the trip. Hopefully, I will be able to employ ideas and new techniques that I research when I arrive back at Furman and beyond. Among the academic elements that I’ll learn, I strive to reach my personal goal of making myself go out and experience the world beyond Greenville, South Carolina. I want to have experiences that will not only make me a better artist, but will make me a stronger, well-rounded, and understanding person of the world around me.

My job at Panera Bread this summer was a challenge. It was my first time working with the public and in the food industry. In fact, it was my first job where I was paid. Most of the time, customers were understanding and kind. Sometimes, however, working with the public allows a person to see the negative sides of people. Dealing with customers that weren’t always kind taught me to be patient or to sympathize in situations that aren’t comfortable. Having an understanding or sympathizing with other people in a new culture is important to the growth of learning about that culture and accepting it as valid. Therefore, my skills of sympathy that I learned as a cashier at Panera Bread will help me to be patient and take time to learn about something that may seem
