It is the governments right to protect citizens from drugs and drug users, however, it is also their duty to use the drug punishment to deter others from doing them and rehabilitating offenders. Their response to drug offenders is causing negative effect which has increases our incarceration and recidivism rates to one of the highest in the world. The consequences are hurting our black communities and over populating our prisons. This has made our punishment for drug offenses unhealthy and less virtuous when compared to many other countries punishments. If we want to do the best and most virtuous punishment for drug offenders that will benefit our society and the offenders then I recommend we focus on using incarceration time or probation time as a time to rehabilitate offenders. This not only fulfills the duty of the criminal justice system, but it also helps people deter from repeating these offenses again. The consequences of rehabilitation would be extremely virtuous because we would be giving minor offenders the chance to turn their lives around. Not taking away the only rights they have because they made bad decisions or taking their chance of success away because they cannot get a job with a felony record. It is in the best interest of society to allow the criminal justice system to complete their duties and punish drug offenders. However, we need to do it in a virtuous way. A way that will help our society in the long run that is why I recommend we use the time as a way to help correct their paths before they end up in prisons for years or lose all hope of every getting better.
