George and Lydia had just found George’s old wallet, Lydia asks how it got there George answered with, “I do not know anything, except that I’m beginning to be sorry we bought that room for the children.” The use of foreshadowing in this line of dialogue shows the dread that George was feeling because of the strange incidents and the children behavior and lies. This instance of foreshadowing also causes questions like, how did the wallet get there. Foreshadowing also happens when George and Lydia Hadley were lying in bed and all of a sudden, they started hearing screams, “two screams, and two people screaming from downstairs, and the roar of lion…Those screams sound familiar.” This occasion of foreshadowing gives readers a sense of mystery and instills thoughts like, what is going to happen with the nursery and why did the screams sound familiar to the Hadleys. However, the most important question is why are the kid in the nursery picture two people being mangled by lions. These occurrences of foreshadowing tell readers something unfortunate is going to happen that involves the kids, the nursery and the parents. The screams and the feeling of dread because of the wallet give hints to the fatal consequences of relying on the nursery to spend time with their kids instead of spending time with their own
